The Shito-ryu Dojo is one of the few in Okinawa. Yusuke Onaga Sensei, a native of Okinawa, went to Osaka to learn Shito-ryu. He later returned to Okinawa to teach foreigners and the local Okinawan people. He is also the first Kumite winner of a National Athletic Meet.

The dojo celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. The Shimbukan Dojo was first opened in 1971 by Eisuke Akamine Sensei who was a student of Ryukyu Kobudo Senseis Shinken Taira and Seiichiro Higa. In 1999 Eisuke Akamine Sensei passed away and the Shimbukan Dojo was taken over by his son Hiroshi Akamine Sensei who is Chairman of the Shimbukan.
